Introduction

In this program the eligibility for these visas are not only based on language and skill assessment but is highly dependent on the points test. The points test creates a selection process that is clearly defined and objective, awarding points to the skills and attributes considered to be a shortage in Australia.

The 1 July 2011 points test is designed to select the best and brightest skilled migrants who will make contribution to the Australia economy. Your nominated position (E.g. Accountant) must also be located in an updated selected occupations List.

The following eligibility categories and ranges are analysed to complete the points:

  • Age: You age must be over 18 years old, but less than 50 years old
  • English Levels: You must have proficient (ILELTS score 7+) to superior English (ILELTS score 8+) levels
  • Work Experience: Your skilled employment experience (in your nominated occupation) must be more than 3 years to score points.
  • Skilled Employment Assessment: by the relevant assessing authority.
  • Education qualifications: In order to claim points you must have the following Doctorate or Master Degree, Bachelor Degree, Australian Diploma or trade qualification, Award or qualification recognised by the assessing authority in the assessment of the skilled occupation. The qualification will need to be recognised as being of a standard comparable to the relevant Australian level qualification.

You can also claim further points in these other categories. Other Australian study requirements, credentialed community language qualifications, study in regional Australia, partner skills and nomination by a state or territory designated area sponsorship.

The Skilled Migration Program caters for applicants who have skills in specific occupations which are required in Australia due to skill shortages.
