University Scholarships

A Scholarship is an award of financial aid and assistance for a student to further his or her education. Scholarships are awarded based upon various criteria, which usually reflect the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award. Scholarships are offered to high achieving students based on academic merit. To be eligible and considered, students must have very high marks in previous studies. Most universities have scholarship programs available to international students. The most popular scholarships available to international students are as follows:

Australia Awards

Australia Awards Scholarships offers the next generation of global leaders an opportunity to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. They provide opportunities for full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study at Australian institutions. They are awarded each year to citizens of participating countries from Asia, the Pacific, Middle East and Africa. Award recipients are required to return home for two years after they have completed their studies, so they can contribute to the development of their country.


Application rounds are held once a year through a competitive selection process.

Scholarship categories available:

  • Australia Awards Leadership Program
    • The Australia Awards Leadership Program is offered to a select number of Australia Awards recipients each year, who are identified as current and future leaders in their country and professional area.
  • Australia Awards Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships
    • The Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships are internationally competitive, merit-based scholarships provided by the Australian Government that support citizens of the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas to undertake study, research and professional development programmes in Australia.
  • Australia Awards Fellowships (administered by ACIAR)
    • John Allwright Fellowship (research postgraduate studies)
    • John Dillon Memorial Fellowship (areas of agricultural research management, agricultural policy and/or extension technologies)

Eligibility requirements:

  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Be a citizen of a participating country.
  • Not be married, engaged to, or a de facto of a person who holds, or is eligible to hold, Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency, at any time during the application, selection or mobilisation phases.
  • Not be current serving military personnel.
  • Not be a citizen of Australia, hold permanent residency in Australia or be applying for a visa to live in Australia permanently.
  • Not be applying for another long-term Australia Award unless they have resided outside of Australia for twice the length of the total time that they were in Australia.
  • Be able to satisfy the admission requirements of the institution at which the award is to be undertaken.
  • Be able to satisfy all requirements of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to hold a DFAT (subclass 576) visa.
  • An Academic IELTS result with an overall score of at least 6.5, with no band less than 6.0 (or higher depending on course requirements).

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)

IPRS enables international students to undertake a postgraduate research qualification in Australia and gain experience with leading Australian researchers.

Scholarships are open to international students of all countries (except New Zealand) and are available for a period of two years for a research master's degree or three years for a research doctorate degree. The scholarship covers tuition fees and health cover costs for scholarship holders, and health cover costs for their dependants.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Be an international student (except New Zealand) and be commencing full-time enrolment in a higher degree by research at an eligible university in Australia.
  • Meet international student visa requirements as specified by theDepartment of Immigration and Border Protection.
  • Maintain a standard Overseas Student Health Coverage.
  • Be commencing full-time enrolment for the first time in a Research Doctorate or Research Masters course.
  • Be undertaking study in a subject area identified by theprovider.
  • Not hold a research qualification regarded by theprovider to be equivalent to an Australian Research Doctorateor, if undertaking aResearchMasters, not hold a research qualification regarded by theproviderto be equivalent to or higher than an AustralianResearchMasters.
  • Not have held anAusAIDscholarship within the two years prior to commencing.
  • Not be receiving a scholarship through other means.

Endeavour scholarships, fellowships and grants


The Endeavour Programme

The Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships offer support to non-Australians to undertake study, research or professional development in Australia.

All recipients will receive:

  • Travel allowance: $3,000.
  • Establishment allowance: $2,000 (Fellowships) or $4,000 (Scholarships)
  • Monthly stipend: $3,000.
  • Health insurance for the full programme duration.

Scholarship categories available:

  • Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship
    • Provides financial support for non-Australian applicants from eligible countries to undertake a postgraduate qualification at a Masters or PhD level either by coursework or research in any field in Australia for up to four years.
  • Endeavour Research Fellowships
    • Provides financial support for non-Australian postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows to undertake short-term research (4-6 months) towards a non-Australian Masters, PhD or postdoctoral research in any field in Australia
    • There are also specific scholarships for Asian and Indian citizens under this stream.
  • Endeavour Vocational Education and Training (VET) Scholarship
    • Provides financial support for non-Australians to undertake vocational education at a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree level in any field in Australia for up to two and a half (2.5) years.
    • The courses are directly related to a trade, occupation or 'vocation' in which the applicant participates. These courses exclude degree and higher level programmes normally delivered by universities.
  • Endeavour Executive Fellowship
    • The Endeavour Executive Fellowship provides financial support towards professional development opportunities (1-4 months) for high achievers in business, industry, education or government for non-Australians.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Be aged 18 years or over at the commencement of their programme.
  • Be a citizen and/or permanent resident of a participating country.
  • Commence their proposed programme after 1 January and no later than 30 November.
  • Provide all relevant supporting documentation.
  • Provide all relevant supporting documentation.
  • Not currently hold or have completed, since 1 January 2013, an Australian Government sponsored scholarship and/or fellowship.
  • Not apply for a category in which they have already completed an Endeavour Scholarship or Fellowship.

Victoria Scholarships

Five scholarships are available for PhD candidates commencing research at a Victorian university. The successful applicants will receive a scholarship of AUD$90,000 for the duration of their PhD.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Be a citizen of a country other than Australia.
  • Have been accepted into a doctoral program at a participating Victorian university.
  • Be intending to complete the majority of your doctoral work in Victoria.
  • Not hold a qualification regarded to be equivalent to an Australian research doctorate.
  • Be willing to be an ambassador for the Victorian International Research Scholarships.
