University (tertiary study) is the highest level of study in Australia. Study can be undertaken at undergraduate level (Bachelor Degree) and/or postgraduate level (Graduate Certificate, Diploma, Masters, and PhD). Australia has 43 universities, 40 of which are government funded, 2 international universities and 1 privately funded.

Australian institutions offer a wide range of courses – from science to management and commerce, humanities to engineering, and law to health sciences. Australian institutions rank among the world’s best by discipline, particularly in engineering and technology, medicine, environmental science, and accounting and finance.  The large number of international students who want to pursue university studies in Australia reflects this global reputation.

University Qualifications

The types of qualifications that can be obtained through University include the following:

Associate Degree An Associate Degree assists with career development and focuses on the basics or foundations within a specific field. 2 years full-time study.
Bachelor Degree A Bachelor Degree is the basic qualification for entry to a field.  It provides the foundations, skills and knowledge to enter your chosen field. 3-4 years full-time study.
Bachelor Degree (Honours) Additional research year for high achieving students. 
Graduate Certificate A certificate will broaden individual skills within your field or a new field.  Pre-requisite: Bachelor Degree. 6 months full-time study.
Graduate Diploma Provide a body of knowledge to increase skills within a professional field and provides a pathway for further learning. Pre-requisite: Bachelor Degree.  1 year full-time study.
Master Degree A course of independent research and/or coursework. Pre-requisite: Bachelor Degree or Bachelor Degree (Honours).  1-2 years full-time study.
Doctoral Degree The highest award offered by Australian institutions.  High level and detailed research and investigation. Pre-requisite: Bachelor or Master's degree. 3 years full-time study.

Australian Academic Year

The Australian academic year begins late February/early March for university students. Universities have two semesters with exams held at the end of each semester in June and November, followed by a two-to-four-week break. The long summer holiday break is from November to March.

Average Tuition Costs

University course fees usually range from AUD$15,000 to $33,000 per year.
